Dependent Child Turns 19

Your child's 19th birthday may not seem like a huge milestone, but there is one major change affecting your benefits under the Welfare Trust. Dependents who are age 19 to 22 must provide proof of full-time student status on a form supplied by the Trust Customer Service Office to retain Welfare coverage. This evidence must be supplied twice a year.

Plan Checklist

  • If your child is a full time student, you must submit a Statement of College Enrollment to the Trust each semester. When your child ceases to be a full time student, you must notify the Trust Customer Service Office within 60 days. You will become liable for any health claims paid by the Trust for any services after your dependent ceases to be eligible.
  • If you do not supply evidence of student status or if your child is no longer a student, the child may be eligible for Continuation Coverage for up to 36 months.
  • If your child becomes totally disabled prior to turning age 19, the child may be eligible to continue as a dependent under your coverage.
